Wright Construction’s Birmingham Division partnered with Hoar Construction to complete exterior improvements at Orlando Health’s Baptist Health facilities in Birmingham, Alabama. The project spanned three campuses: Princeton Baptist, Walker Baptist, and Shelby Baptist. The scope included 670 tons of mill paving with restriping at Walker Baptist, additional mill paving, sealcoating, and restriping at Princeton and Shelby Baptist, nighttime paving operations at Shelby Baptist to minimize disruption to hospital activity, and demolition of a dilapidated building on one of the properties. The upgrades were designed to enhance curb appeal and functionality across multiple parking lots serving patients, staff, and visitors.

About Orlando Health and the Baptist Health Campuses

Orlando Health is a private, not-for-profit, integrated academic healthcare system serving Florida, Alabama, and Puerto Rico. The system expanded into Alabama in 2024, acquiring a majority ownership stake in what was then Brookwood Baptist Health, a five-hospital network in the Birmingham area with more than 1,700 licensed beds, dozens of primary and specialty care clinics, and thousands of affiliated physicians and team members. In early 2025, the system rebranded the Birmingham hospitals as Baptist Health, with Princeton Baptist Medical Center, Walker Baptist Medical Center, and Shelby Baptist Medical Center taking on new names under the Orlando Health-affiliated Baptist Health identity.

As Orlando Health integrates these campuses into its broader network, exterior infrastructure upgrades support the transition by giving each facility a refreshed, well-maintained appearance that reflects the standards of its new ownership. Why This Work Matters for Hospital Campuses

Parking lots at active hospital campuses carry constant traffic from patients, visitors, staff, and emergency vehicles, often around the clock. Deteriorated asphalt creates safety hazards and slows traffic flow at facilities where quick, reliable access matters most. Mill paving removes the damaged top layer of existing pavement and replaces it with a new, properly compacted surface, extending pavement life without the cost or disruption of a full reconstruction. Sealcoating protects new and existing asphalt from water intrusion, UV damage, and everyday wear, while restriping restores clear lane markings, accessible parking designations, and pedestrian pathways that keep a busy hospital lot organized and safe.

Because hospitals cannot pause operations for construction, this kind of exterior work requires constant coordination with facility staff to protect ambulance access, patient drop-off zones, and general traffic flow throughout the project.

Project Execution

Wright Construction managed all three campuses with the demands of active hospital operations in mind. At Walker Baptist, the crew completed 670 tons of mill paving and restriping ahead of schedule despite winter weather conditions that required careful planning around weather windows, asphalt plant production schedules, and trucking logistics. At Shelby Baptist, the team shifted paving operations to nighttime hours to keep daytime hospital traffic and ambulance access unaffected. Princeton and Shelby Baptist saw simultaneous paving work executed under the same difficult winter conditions, requiring tight coordination between crews, equipment, and material delivery across two active sites at once. The project also included demolition of a dilapidated building on one of the properties, clearing the site as part of the broader exterior improvement effort.
