Project Overview

Wright Construction’s Birmingham Division partnered with JohnsonKreis Construction to provide full concrete services for the Community Life Building at Westminster School at Oak Mountain in Birmingham, Alabama. The Birmingham office furnished and installed the concrete foundations, foundation walls, slabs on grade, slabs on deck, sidewalks, and concrete paving required for this addition. The project included approximately 1,700 cubic yards of concrete, 107 tons of steel reinforcement bar, and 520 linear feet of 12-inch-thick, 15-foot-tall foundation walls, elements that demanded precision and technical expertise to meet both structural and schedule requirements.

About Westminster School and the Community Life Building

Westminster School at Oak Mountain is a K-12 private Christian school in Birmingham’s Overton neighborhood, founded in 1999 as a ministry of Oak Mountain Presbyterian Church. The school enrolls several hundred students across its lower, middle, and upper divisions and has built a reputation for combining a classical academic curriculum with a strong campus community.

The new Community Life Building adds gathering and recreational space to the Westminster campus, supporting the kind of school-wide events, athletics, and community programming that the school’s mission emphasizes. Building permits for the project placed it among the higher-value construction projects issued in the Birmingham metro at the time, reflecting the scale of the addition and the structural work required to bring it to life.

Why the Structural Concrete Work Matters

A building of this size starts with a foundation system built to carry significant structural load. The 520 linear feet of 12-inch-thick, 15-foot-tall foundation walls on this project reflect the scale of the structure above grade, requiring precise formwork, reinforcement placement, and concrete consolidation to perform correctly for the life of the building. Foundation walls of this height and thickness need consistent quality control from footing to top of wall, since even minor placement or curing issues can compromise structural performance.

The 107 tons of steel reinforcement bar tied into the concrete work gives the foundations and walls the tensile strength needed to resist cracking and shifting under load, particularly important for a building that will see heavy foot traffic and gathering use. Slabs on grade and slabs on deck round out the structural work, providing the interior floor systems the building needs, while sidewalks and concrete paving extend that same durability to the areas around the building where students, families, and staff will walk and gather.

Project Execution

Wright Construction managed the full concrete scope from foundation to finish, working alongside JohnsonKreis Construction to keep the project on schedule. The team sequenced excavation, formwork, reinforcement placement, and concrete placement across the foundation walls, slabs, and paving to meet the structural specifications required for a building of this scale. Coordinating 1,700 cubic yards of concrete across multiple building elements required careful scheduling of concrete deliveries and crew logistics to keep the project moving without delays.

Impact on the School Community

The Community Life Building gives Westminster School additional space to bring students, families, and staff together outside the classroom, supporting the school’s emphasis on community as part of its educational mission. A structurally sound foundation and well-built concrete systems give the school a facility built to serve the campus for decades of use, from everyday gatherings to larger school-wide events.
