Project Overview
Wright Construction completed major site improvements at the Village on Whitesburg Plaza shopping center in Huntsville, Alabama. Located in a high-traffic retail corridor, the project required precise coordination to minimize disruption to tenants and customers throughout construction. The team performed asphalt milling and paving, concrete work, striping, and ADA compliance upgrades across the property, with support from partner contractors Apache Electrical, CSFCO Steel, and Kimley-Horn Engineering. Because of the busy retail environment, much of the work took place during off-hours, including overnight milling and early morning concrete pours. Every phase was carefully planned to keep businesses operating smoothly while maintaining production schedules. When the timeline tightened, the Birmingham Division stepped in to support the Huntsville office, ensuring the project stayed on track and delivering a high-quality finish, safely and efficiently.
About Village on Whitesburg Plaza
Village on Whitesburg Plaza is a grocery-anchored neighborhood shopping center located at the corner of Airport Road and Whitesburg Drive in Huntsville, Alabama. The Fresh Market serves as the property’s anchor tenant, with additional tenants including AT&T, Bonefish Grill, Drake’s, Nadeau, CAVA, First Watch, Panera Bread, and Learning Express Toys & Gifts. The center recently secured $22.5 million in refinancing, reflecting continued investor confidence in the property’s performance and its position in one of Huntsville’s established retail corridors.
As a heavily trafficked, tenant-occupied retail center, Village on Whitesburg Plaza presented a different set of constraints than a standalone construction site. Every phase of work had to account for customers moving between stores, restaurant operating hours, and delivery traffic serving multiple businesses at once, all while keeping the center open and accessible throughout construction.
Why This Work Matters for an Active Retail Center
Shopping centers depend on parking lots and walkways that are safe, accessible, and easy to navigate, since a poor first impression at the parking lot can affect how customers feel about the businesses inside. Asphalt milling and paving address deteriorated pavement that creates rough driving surfaces and drainage issues, while fresh striping keeps traffic flow and parking organized across a busy lot serving multiple tenants. ADA compliance upgrades ensure the property meets accessibility requirements for all customers and visitors, a critical consideration for any retail center serving the public.
Because Village on Whitesburg Plaza remained open and operating throughout the project, the construction schedule had to work around the center’s business hours rather than the other way around. Overnight milling and early morning concrete pours let Wright’s crews complete disruptive phases of the work when foot traffic and vehicle activity were at their lowest, protecting the daily operations of every tenant on site.
Project Execution
Wright’s Huntsville Division led the project, planning each phase around the center’s operating hours to avoid disrupting tenants and customers. Asphalt milling and paving took place overnight, while concrete work was scheduled for early morning hours ahead of the center’s opening. Striping and ADA compliance upgrades were coordinated alongside the paving and concrete work to keep the overall timeline moving. When the project’s schedule tightened, the Birmingham Division stepped in to provide additional support, allowing the team to maintain its production schedule without sacrificing the quality of the finished work.
Impact on the Business and Community
These improvements give Village on Whitesburg Plaza a refreshed, safer, and more accessible property for the customers who visit its well-known tenants every day. Completing the work without disrupting business operations protected revenue for every tenant on site during construction, while the cross-division support between Huntsville and Birmingham demonstrates the kind of flexibility Wright Construction brings to projects with tight timelines and high operational stakes.
